Tuition fees for PhD candidates are currently € 10,000 for the first year and € 6,000 for subsequent years. The tuition fee does not include travel, accommodation, study materials, thesis printing, insurance, living and incidental costs. However, up to € 2,000 of the tuition for the first year will be available for the costs of conferences and courses outside VU University during later years. The fee can be partly waived in exchange for assistance in research or teaching; however, the number of student assistantships is limited. The cost of living for the average student coming to the Netherlands is approximately € 8,000 per year. Scholarships are available from Dutch, EU and home governments, industry and non-governmental organizations. Alternatively – or in parallel – one may consider applying for a temporary staff position on a pre-determined topic and project (see vacancies).
