Frans Berkhout stepped down as director of IVM
By mutual agreement Prof. Frans Berkhout has stepped down as director of IVM. Frans Berkhout was appointed in 2004 at the VU as professor of Innovation and Sustainability and as director of the IVM. He has served in this function for almost nine years, and was reappointed twice. In this period, IVM has grown substantially and has further improved its international standing as one of Europe’s most prominent environmental research institutions.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank Frans for his efforts in bringing IVM at the current scientific level. In his typical ‘gentleman style’ Frans has continuously encouraged all IVM scientists and students to improve their scientific level and output from simple presentations to H-index. This had led to a much better scientific output of the institute for which we can all be grateful.
A formal succession to the directorship of IVM will be decided in the course of the next year in line with the positioning of IVM within the planned Amsterdam Faculty of Science. I have been asked by the dean to lead IVM as Acting Director until the end of 2013, which I have accepted. This will be a joint effort with the management team of the department heads. Next to this I will also be managing the C&B department.
Frans Berkhout remains active in numerous national and international commissions and programmes in the area of his professorship and in various other functions within the VU. He will thereby continue to give further visibility to the important VU priority domain of “sustainability”.
