Dr Bert van Hattum (PhD) is a senior scientist in environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology with more than 27 years of experience, and has been involved in many experimental, field, and modelling studies on chemical fate, bioaccumulation and food chain transfer, within the scope of PhD projects, contract research for government, industry, NGOs, and various EU Framework projects. Through memberships of professional and network organizations (IAWR, SETAC, SEDNET) he has built up an extensive network. Recent and current studies include the development of models for the exposure assessment of antifoulants and ballast water (MAMPEC), field surveys and models for bioavailability and bioaccumulation in freshwater and estuarine food webs, whole effluent testing of industrial effluents with biological and chemical methods, evaluation frameworks for sediment quality assessment, bioavailability of sediment-bound contaminants, and organotins in marine invertebrates and mammals. He has participated in various advisory workshops on exposure assessment and monitoring for the Dutch Government, US-EPA, IMO/GESAMP, CEFIC and Eurochlor. Teaching activities included contributions on chemistry, toxicology and environmental modelling of pollutants in various BSc and MSc courses at the VU University and the University of Amsterdam, training courses, as well as coaching and supervision of PhD students. He has authored or co-authored over more than 72 reviewed papers, 101 technical reports, 8 book chapters, and 75 presentations at conferences.
