Summary

Jana finished her Ph.D. in environmental chemistry in Stockholm 2006, mainly focusing on analytical skills of organic environmental pollutants in several matrixes. During the Ph.D. studies she gained solid knowledge in quality control and statistical evaluation. Since then she has expanded her expertise by including the field of toxicology in the work performed during the first post doc at the IVM (2007-2009). The work performed there was implementing the Effect-Directed Analysis (EDA) approach which combines fractionation techniques and bioassays to guide the identification of key toxicants.

She also worked for the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy for 2.5 years where she gained insight and experience to work for the European Commission. She was there involved in a project supporting the Stockholm Convention to facilitate the Global Monitoring of priority pollutants.

Now she is back at IVM, this time as project leader and she will participate in several European projects, e.g. PERFOOD and PHARMAS.

Academic training

2006Doctor of Philosophy at the Department of Environmental Chemistry, Stockholm University, Sweden. Supervised by Åke Bergman.
2001Bachelor at the Department of Environmental Chemistry, Stockholm University, Sweden and work performed at Ergo Forschungsgesellschaft, Hamburg, Germany. Supervised by Åke Bergman and Olaf Päpke.

Professional employment history

2011 to presentEmployed as project manager to contribute to the implementation of existing national and international projects and to acquire competitive projects to the institute. Projects are e.g. PERFOOD (investigating the presence and behaviour of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in our surrounding environment and food), PHARMAS (performing a human health risk assessment of antibiotics and anti-cancer drugs found in the environment)
2009-2011As an experienced researcher the main task was to implement an ongoing project, supporting the Global Monitoring Network Plan under the Stockholm Convention to facilitate the monitoring of POPs and their world-wide distribution. Except working with well known analytical tools such as GC/MS and other laboratory techniques (GPC, SPE, LC etc), the dataset produced will be geographically evaluated to calibrate the theoretical model.
2007-2009Employed as an analytical/environmental chemist to support the Water Framework Directive with the aim to identify chemical key-toxicants in European water systems. This was performed by the Effect-Directed Analysis (EDA) approach, combining chemistry and toxicology to isolate effect-causing compounds for identification. I broadened my knowledge within the field of toxicology and worked with the performance of bioassays and interpretation of the results (e.g. TTR-binding, AR/ER-calux, UmuC etc.), which guides the fractionation steps to simplify the complex mixture in an environmental sample. Much focus was put on the identification of the effect-causing compounds, using complementary analytical techniques (e.g. GC/MS, LC/MS, LTQ-Orbitrap)
