Toon Haer has been employed as a PhD student at the IVM since December 2013. In the coming years he will be working on the ENHANCE project under supervision of Prof. Jeroen Aerts. The ENHANCE project aims to enhance risk management partnerships for catastrophic natural disasters in Europe and to provide guidelines and policy recommendations for the horizontal integration of risk management and climate-proofing in policies.
In 2012, Toon did an internship at the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, University of Maryland, USA, under supervision of Prof. Eugenia Kalnay. His thesis on relative sea-level rise led to a publication and sparked his interest in flood risk research. During his PhD, Toon will be working with Agent-Based Models to evaluate future flood adaptation strategies on different scales throughout Europe. Since the hazard is influenced by human action and vice versa, Toon will investigate the dynamic coupling of the human and natural system.
