Nynke’s research focuses on analyzing the links between ecosystem functioning and the demands for ecosystem services by society. translating ecosystem functions provided by biodiversity into ecosystem services on European and regional scale, using several spatially explicit modelling techniques. She developed a set of models for mapping ecosystem services that has been used to analyse policy options for a no net loss initiative, as well as in the Nature Outlook of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. In HERCULES, Nynke works on assessing land use changes in cultural landscapes and their consequences on ecosystem service supply and demand. In her PhD, Nynke studied the impact of land use history, management and land use change on soil organic carbon stocks in the Netherlands.
