A rapidly increasing share of the land is used by settlements, but we hardly know how and where settlements change. This VIDI project will use large-scale satellite data to map these processes and use this data to analyse change processes and develop computer models to guide sustainable land use development.
VIDI is part of the NWO Talent Scheme, aiming at experienced researchers who have carried out successful research for a number of years after obtaining their PhDs. The grant enables recipients to develop their own innovative line of research and set up their own research group in the coming five years.
Dr van Vliet is a geographer with a broad interest in processes and consequences of land use change at multiple spatial scales. In 2012 he started at IVM as a postdoctoral researcher and since 2017 has been Assistant Professor in Land Use Science in the Environmental Geography group.
