Sicco Brandsma and Jacob de Boer in special edition on chromatography

In the special edition of the Dutch chemical journal 'Chemisch Weekblad' on chromatography (November 2011), Jacob de Boer and Sicco Brandsma elaborate on the added value of the personal computer in handling the results of both gas and liquid chromatography.

Nowadays, the gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) machines all run via a computer. It this way, researchers have the results much faster than before the PC existed. Work is now done in one week instead of three weeks, for instance. The autosampler produces graphs and results, such as detecting peak results or calculating the quantity of certain substances. The drawback of these fully automatic machines is that the researcher has to become computer expert as well to master the software.
