ATHON International Open Workshop on Mixture Toxicity at IVM
On April 1st, Dr. Timo Hamers and Dr. Heather Leslie of the Chemistry & Biology Department of IVM organized an open workshop on mixture toxicity. The workshop was part of the annual meeting of the ATHON project, an EU-sponsored FP6 program on the toxicity and hazard of non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (NDL-PCBs) in food, in which IVM is a partner.
Valuing ecosystem services for environmental management
The concept of ecosystem services has received significant attention since the appearance of the Millennium Ecosystem assessment. Ecosystem services are distinct from other ecosystem functions and values in that there is an explicit recognition of the human demand for these natural assets. Ecosystem services can be subdivided into five categories: provisioning (e.g. the production of food and water); regulating (e.g. the control of climate and disease); supporting (e.g. nutrient cycles and crop pollination; cultural (e.g. spiritual and recreational benefits); and preserving, (e.g. reducing uncertainty through the maintenance of diversity). The concept of ecosystem services provides a means to “translate” the role of the biophysical environment in sustaining humanity, and provide insight into the relations between human society and the biophysical environment.
A dialogue for sustainable energy in Amsterdam
Saving energy and using renewable energy rank high on political agendas nowadays. In many cities attempts have been made to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. The European research programme Ecostiler (Energy efficient COmmunity STImulation) also links into this by aiming to achieve energy efficiency and the use of local sustainable energy at the level of local communities.
How can we adapt to climate change in the Rhine basin?
In a cross-boundary research project called ACER, we aim to identify how long term developments such as climate change, socio economic developments, spatial planning and policy developments influence water management in the Rhine basin. An important issue that Aline te Linde analyzes in her PhD research is the quantification of future probabilities of the occurrence of future floods and droughts.
