NOBEL LAUREATES CALL FOR STRENGTHENED EARTH SYSTEM GOVERNANCE

On May 16-19, more than twenty Nobel Laureates, several leading policy makers and some of the world’s most renowned thinkers and experts on global sustainability met for the Third Nobel Laureate Symposium at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm with the support of HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

The Nobel Laureate Symposium took a transdisciplinary approach to discuss how economic, political and social systems can be governed within the boundaries of the planet. The Symposium concluded with the Stockholm Memorandum: Tipping the Scales towards Sustainability. In this memorandum, Nobel Laureates call for "strengthening of Earth System Governance" as a priority for coherent global action.

This memorandum has been submitted to the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability appointed by the UN Secretary General and will feed into the preparations for the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

The Earth System Governance Project is undertaking a range of activities to contribute to the process leading to the Rio+20 conference theme on the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development and to strengthen earth system governance. This includes the production of a Policy Assessment on the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development. A dedicated website informs about all these activities: http://www.ieg.earthsystemgovernance.org.

The Earth System Governance Project is the largest social science research network in the area of governance and global environmental change. Its international research programme takes up the challenge of exploring political solutions and novel, more effective governance systems to cope with global environmental change. More information on the project, including publications, events, and its large international network of researchers and research institutions is available at http://www.earthsystemgovernance.org.
